Call for Artist Participation-Siggraph Asia 2009...

SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 Art Gallery is calling for artworks and works of design to be showcased in the 2nd edition of the annual SIGGRAPH Asia Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Yokohama, Japan.

The 2009 Art Gallery The Art Gallery will feature a diverse, international body of art and design by emerging and established artists, ranging from pieces driven by technology to works that critically comment on our technological society. the exhibit will be made up of both curated and juried work, and the works will be selected based on four criteria-the depth of the concept of the work, aesthetics, craftsmanship, and relevance to the theme of the show.

The theme for the SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 Art Gallery will be ADAPTATION. How does man or other species change to fit new circumstance and conditions in an ever-changing world? How does a species develop physically and behaviorally in order to survive and reproduce? How is technology used to achieve adaptation, or how does it destroy one’s ability to adapt? Has technology really helped us adapt? At this critical time in humanity’s evolutionary journey, we are looking for artworks that respond to these kinds of questions. We are calling for artworks that resonate strongly with our challenging existence in an ever-changing world of technological advances, environmental crisis, and global shifts of consciousness.

The medium can include but are not limited to the following categories:

• 2D, 3D artwork: such as digital prints, paintings, and sculpture
• Art installations and environments
• Interactives: installations, web-based art, responsive media, robotics, touch-screens
• Time-based work (video/animation): for monitors, installations, or projections
• Artwork using digital communities: including alternative networks, mobile, and locative media
• Performance: Electronically mediated performances, interactive performances, and digital art happenings.
• Artwork using digital audio
• Works of Design

The exhibition will consist of a curated body of work and a juried body of work. The jury will be made up of artists and professionals working in the field of fine art, new media, and computer graphics. We are accepting submissions globally, and we encourage artists of all nationalities to apply. Visual Artists new to SIGGRAPH who have relevant artworks are encouraged to apply.

The members of the SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 Art Gallery Jury are:

Yuko Oda (New York Institute of Technology), Mariko Tanaka (Independent Curator/Cavin-Morris Gallery), Hans Tammen (Harvestworks Digital Media Art Center), Jing Zhou (Monmouth University), Terry Nauheim
(New York Institute of Technology), Yuka Yokoyama (Co-director, Basekamp),
Katie Morabito (New York University), Matthew Garrison (Albright College), Nobuo Takahashi (Nagoya City University), Ellen Pearlman (Yuanfen Gallery, Beijing/Brooklyn Rail), Yasuo Ohba (Namco Bandai Games)

Once accepted, the artist will work closely with the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery Committee to ship and display the work in Yokohama. There will be an installation crew to support with the technical and physical aspects of the installation. Performances will be scheduled in advance, and advertised on the website and in printed conference materials. Artists who are able to attend the conference in Japan will be encouraged to give an artist talk, and participate in artist panel discussions.

Accepted artworks will be exhibited in Yokohama Pacifico during the conference in December, 2009. Accompanying the exhibition will be an extensive catalogue, Digital Experiences, online exhibit, online archive, and promotional video on DVD to document and archive the artwork. Press tours and other media outreach will be organized to further increase the impact and publicity of the exhibition.

The submission deadline is 5 June, 23:59 UTC/GMT. The jury’s decisions will be announced in early August

Things Don’t Always Go the Way You Want...

newpaint It dosen’t look like I can have the showing I wanted next month. I most likely needed more time and it’s been said by someone

“things always work out for the best”

Who said that, I would love to know.

We are not Insane...

Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch

I say this because the media and therefore the public seem to wrap in the concept of the Mad Artist. I don’t think insanity is confined to creative types. There is enogh craziness in the world to cover everyone els. The Chicago Institude is having an exhibition of some of his work starting now until it starts to get warmer.  Don’t I will go Chicago when it’s cold. The wind is truly not very kind.
